Message stats

Message stats for Discord, without reading a word

ODIN counts how many messages each member posts and never what they say. Run /stats, /top or /chart in Discord, or log in with Discord for the Messages page. It stays off until an admin switches it on.

Sample dataMessages per day in Night Owls, a made-up server, with made-up counts.

Counts messages, never what they say

ODIN adds one to a counter for each message: for that member, that channel and that hour. It never reads, stores or logs what you write, attachments, links or replies, and it does not ask Discord for message content.

Counts are kept per hour for 400 days and per day for as long as the server uses ODIN. No page shows a channel name.

See the privacy page for every line of what ODIN records.

What ODIN keeps for a message

Counted

  • One message, for a member, a channel and an hour

Never read or stored

  • The text
  • Attachments and links
  • Replies
  • Message content from Discord

Off until an admin switches it on

A new kind of data gets its own consent step. Message counting is off in every server until someone who manages it switches on Count messages in the dashboard, where the privacy note sits beside the switch.

While it is off, /stats still answers with the voice part and says messages are off, and /top with messages says the same. Messages sent before the switch was on are not counted.

Members stay in control: /odin optout stops the counting for them and hides their counts in that server. The counts are kept, not shown.

/stats, /top and /chart in Discord

/stats shows a member's time in voice with their rank and their number of messages, or the totals of the whole server. /top ranks the top ten members by messages or by voice time, over the period you pick.

/chart draws a bar or line chart of messages, of voice time in hours, or both one above the other. Count them per UTC day, or sum them by the hour of the day. The chart shows a total and the highest point, and never a channel.

A member who opted out or hides their activity details is answered with one line, so none of the cases can be told from another.

A Messages page on the dashboard

Members who log in with Discord see a Messages page for the server: the total, messages per day and the top members, next to the voice stats. Only members of the server can open it.

A free server sees the last 90 days of daily detail and the top 100, and the total since the start in full. Premium shows the full history and every row.

The same counts feed the activity heatmap and the totals of a public server page if the owner publishes one.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Discord message stats bot read what my members write?

No. ODIN adds one to a counter for each message, for that member, that channel and that hour. It never reads, stores or logs the text, attachments, links or replies, and it does not ask Discord for message content.

How do I turn message stats on?

Message counting is off until someone who manages the server switches on Count messages in the dashboard. Until then /stats still answers with the voice part and says messages are off, and /top with messages says the same.

What do /stats, /top and /chart show?

/stats gives the voice time and the messages of a member or of the whole server. /top ranks the top ten members by messages or by voice time, and /chart draws messages, voice time or both, per day or by hour of the day.

How much history does a free server see?

A free server sees the top 100 of a board and the last 90 days of daily detail, and totals since the start are shown in full. Premium shows every row and the full history. Counts are kept per hour for 400 days and per day for as long as the server uses ODIN.

Can a member keep their messages out of the stats?

Yes. /odin optout stops ODIN counting that member's messages and hides their counts in that server. The counts are kept, not shown, and /odin optin reverses it. A request to erase their data deletes the counts everywhere.
